Incontinence: Get the Support You Need Through CAPS. You could be eligible for free incontinence products

Incontinence is a common condition that affects many Australians.

While it can be a sensitive topic, it’s important to understand that you are not alone and that there are resources and support available. One such resource is the Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS), an Australian government program that provides financial assistance to those living with incontinence.

CAPS is designed to help cover the cost of continence products, such as pads, pants, and catheters. The Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS) has increased its annual payment to $694.80, effective 1 Jul 2024*.

This payment is provided on an annual or bi-annual basis.

  • Annual payments are made in July at the start of each financial year
  • Bi-annual payments are made in January and July each year.

Am I eligible for CAPS?

To be eligible for CAPS, you must have a permanent and severe incontinence condition confirmed by registered health professional, and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or have permanent residence rights*. This can include conditions such as overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, or bowel incontinence.

How can I access CAPS?

Speak with your Amcal pharmacist. They can help you navigate the CAPS application process and advise what supporting documentation you require. Many continence product suppliers, such as MoliCare and TENA, also offer advice and support on their websites.

What does the process involve?

  • Get ready to apply – this includes getting a copy of the Application Guidelines and Application Form or from October 2023, if you are applying for yourself you can use your Medicare online account through myGov, or in the Express Medicare Mobile app, to apply.
  • Download the CAPS Application Form
  • Complete a Continence Aids Assessment with a continence nurse advisor or approved health professional.
  • Submit the form along with your continence assessment to Services Australia.

If your application is approved, you’ll receive an annual, tax-free payment on 1st July to help cover the costs of continence products. The payment amount depends on your circumstances.

Using your CAPS funding

You can choose to have the funding deposited into your own bank account and purchase continence products from your preferred supplier. If your local Amcal pharmacy is your preferred supplier, speak with them about depositing your funds into an account with the pharmacy. This is a convenient way to collect your products as required, with the cost deducted from your CAPS funding balance. The pharmacy may even be happy to offer home delivery, for that extra level of care and convenience. Your local Amcal pharmacist can help you to choose the right continence products to suit your lifestyle and needs.

You can also nominate someone to act on your behalf for anything related to CAPS.
