Your Amcal Annual Health Check can be a great indicator of general health, allowing you to understand your risk of developing some serious and preventable health conditions.

Four key health measures are checked as part of Your Annual Health Check in one easy and convenient consultation with your Amcal pharmacist, with results provided immediately. We will check and assess:

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure

Blood pressure (BP) is a measurement of pressure in the blood vessels as the heart pumps blood around the body.
Having prolonged high BP (called hypertension) can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke, especially if coupled with other risk factors such as high cholesterol levels or being overweight.
We measure BP using a cuff that gently tightens around your upper arm. Depending on your result we will provide recommendations on managing blood pressure.

Body mass index (BMI) determines whether you are within the healthy weight range for your height.

BMI

6 out of 10 Aussie adults are overweight or obese1, putting them at risk of developing serious health conditions.
Body mass index (BMI) determines whether you are within the healthy weight range for your height. Your pharmacist may also check your waist circumference, as fat carried around your middle puts you at higher health risk.

Blood sugar

Blood sugar

Sugar, also called glucose, provides energy for every cell in the body. Insulin and glucagon hormones maintain a sugar balance between the blood and the cells that require energy.
High blood sugar levels can indicate that these hormones are not working as expected and may be a sign of health conditions like diabetes. Prolonged high blood sugar levels can irreversibly damage blood vessels.
We measure blood sugar using a finger-prick blood test that requires no fasting and can provide results on the spot. If the levels are outside the recommended range, further tests may be arranged with your GP.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is needed for the body’s cells to function normally, but consistently high levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
While there are two main cholesterol subtypes, Your Annual Health Check will measure your total cholesterol levels using a finger prick blood test and provide results during the consultation. If the levels are outside the recommended range, further tests may be arranged with your GP.

Frequently asked questions

Why is physical activity important for health?

Regular physical activity is important in improving your overall health and well-being. Being active can help you manage your weight, improve your mood and energy levels, get fitter and stay in shape, improve your sleep quality and reduce your risk of heart and blood vessel diseases, diabetes, and other chronic conditions, as well as some cancers.
You should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days of the week. Moderate activity means you are active at a pace that you notice a slight increase in your breathing but can still talk. Examples include fast-paced walking, cycling, dancing, and swimming.
Speak with your Amcal pharmacist for help and advice on increasing your physical activity.
