When should I consult a doctor?

Most people can manage or relieve hay fever on their own. However, your Amcal pharmacist may refer you to your doctor if your symptoms are: 

• Persistent — meaning that you experience symptoms at least 4 days in a week, for at least 4 weeks or more².
• Moderate to severe — meaning that your symptoms affect your sleep and daily activities such as work, school, sport and leisure².

Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and asthma attacks need urgent emergency first aid. In an emergency, always call triple zero (000). 

Amcal products to relieve allergy and hay fever symptoms 

• Antihistamines
  Antihistamines are often the first line of defence against allergy and hay fever symptoms³. Available in tablets, syrups, eye drops and nasal sprays, they work by blocking the body’s response to histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. 
• Nasal sprays
  For those experiencing sneezing or a blocked, runny or itchy nose, corticosteroid nasal sprays can provide effective relief. These sprays reduce mucus production and inflammation, helping to relieve and in some cases even prevent hay fever symptoms⁴. Saline nasal sprays and washes can also be used to physically remove mucus and allergens which cause allergic symptoms.
• Eye Drops
  If itchy, red, or watery eyes are a concern, eye drops can soothe irritation and reduce symptoms. Our Amcal pharmacists can recommend eye drops specifically formulated for individuals who wear contact lenses or have sensitive eyes.
