It takes a village to raise a child, and the whole family to keep them safe.

Becoming a parent is one of life’s greatest moments. As with the fulfilment of raising a child, so too comes the innate desire to help keep your child safe and protected, which includes routine vaccinations and health check-ups.

Amcal recently polled the nation in a broad survey on vaccinations, where it was revealed that 2 in 5 Aussies (41.1%) don’t know what vaccinations they need before planning a pregnancy, and half of Aussies (48.8%) shared that they didn’t know what vaccinations they might need while pregnant.¹

The good news is that we are here to provide you the answers you need about vaccinations to keep you and your child protected.

If you’re planning pregnancy, you should check that you’re up-to-date with all your routine and seasonal vaccinations and consider the below vaccinations; however, your doctor may recommend more based on your immunity:²

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
  • Whooping cough (Pertussis)
  • Influenza (flu)
  • COVID-19²

During pregnancy, the Australian Department of Health advises that you can receive both the flu and whooping cough vaccinations,² as well as COVID-19 vaccinations.3

In fact, infants under six months are too young to receive the flu vaccination, so the best way to protect your newborn before then is to receive a flu vaccination during pregnancy.² The whooping cough vaccination is recommended between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy so that the antibodies transfer to your growing baby.²

It’s not just mum who needs vaccinations before bub’s arrival. One of the most important steps in keeping your baby protected is ensuring that anyone who will be around them as a newborn is also up-to-date with their vaccinations. This includes other parents, grandparents, family, and friends – the sky’s the limit.4 It is particularly important for all visitors to be vaccinated against whooping cough, which can be deadly to newborns until they’re vaccinated themselves at 6 weeks.
