COVID-19 Boosters: When to get them

With 3 in 5 (60%) Australians now triple vaccinated against COVID-19, it's fair to say that in some ways, the pandemic has united us all. According to a recent survey conducted by Amcal, more than half (59%)¹ of Aussies agree it has brought the country closer together, in ways not seen before and we’re proud of our pharmacy teams for their part in helping the community through the pandemic.

While many of us have now received a booster vaccination, there remains some confusion around when you can actually get a booster, with more than half (54%) of Aussies claiming to not know whether they need a booster shot if they have already been infected with COVID-19.¹

Here’s what you need to know:

  • When you should get a COVID-19 booster

In our recent survey, close to 3 in 4 (72.3%) Aussies said they got the COVID-19 vaccination to protect themselves, while a similar 3 in 5 (63.1%) said they got the COVID-19 vaccination to protect their family¹. The booster dose is an important step towards keeping you and your loved ones safe, so as soon as you’re eligible you should consider getting a booster vaccination at your local Amcal pharmacy.
    • If you received your first two COVID-19 doses three or more months ago

COVID-19 boosters are now available to all Australians aged 16+ who have already received the first two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination three or more months ago². The ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) recommends the Pfizer vaccine for those aged 16-17, however, either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine can be administered to those aged 18+, regardless of what vaccine you received for the first two doses.²

    • When you’re getting your flu vaccination

As winter approaches, many Aussies are getting their flu shot. You can receive both your COVID-19 booster and flu shot at the same time, so if you haven’t received your booster yet, book in for both now at amcal.com.au/bookings. Receiving both vaccinations at once does not increase your risk of adverse reactions or reduce the effectiveness of the vaccinations.⁴
    • If you have been previously infected with COVID-19

If you have already had COVID-19, you still need a booster dose to remain as protected as possible from being infected with the virus again. You can get the booster dose as soon as the acute symptoms have subsided.³

When to wait to get your COVID-19 booster

    • If you currently have COVID-19 or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms

If you currently have COVID-19 or are still experiencing acute symptoms from the infection, you should wait to get your booster shot until all symptoms have resolved. Acute COVID-19 symptoms include, but are not limited to, fever, coughing, sore throat and shortness of breath. For more information, visit COVID-19 disease, symptoms, and variants.

A COVID-19 booster vaccination will give you the most protection possible against COVID-19 for the longest period of time and the Amcal team are here to help keep you and your family protected this winter. Book yours today.
